Made by Terry Lyle
Hi Jonni, I finally did it and created my first paper mache piece in almost 40 years. When you posted your “simple mask” technique and then showed your first shape, a rectangle with rounded corners at the top, I immediately thought “ancient greek warrior/god face”. Started late so it’s not really a mask. It was going to be simple. I was going to just paint the features on the flat surface. Then got the idea (because of all your inspirational videos) to add some dimension. I used the basic flour paste method because I wanted that rough surface to give the idea of stone. I’ve attached photos. One of the basic construction method then a couple of final shots. I had great fun with this and will definitely be including paper mache projects in my future plans. A million thanks for your creativity and encouragement.

That is amazing! And inspirational! I think I’d like to make a three-dimensional mask with a carved feature. However I think I’m going to go for the wood grain look and see how that works. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Angela! I’ll be eager to see how you create the wood grain effect. You also gave me an idea about how to use Joni’s outdoor cement paper mache. How about making one of those tree faces that give some character to our favorite tree?
Very nice, Terry. It’s fun to see how the simplicity of the original square mask helped you come up with a truly creative work of art. Thank you so much for showing it to us! 🙂
Thanks Joni! I had a lot of fun doing this project. My ultimate paper mache goal is to create a great replica of a beautiful bonsai. I’ll have to think on that one for a while.
