I live on Turtle Beach, Thailand. Every year they release the baby turtles from the hatchery on March 1 and celebrate with a parade. I will be the first foreigner to ever participate in this parade. My float is covered with old cigarette lighters I find on the beach, and the base of it will be hung with papier mache turtle shells, on which I pay a retired school teacher to write, “Love Turtle Beach” and “Love Sea Turtles.” All materials purchased here, so it’s school glue and poster paints. The cellulose comes from recycled cardboard I liberate from the local grocery store.

Steve, your turtle shell float looks great! You may be the first person to use old cigarette lighters for a mosaic sculpture! What an inventive way to use found objects – and the baby turtles will appreciate not having to walk around them on the way to the sea. 🙂
