I made this african baby elephant as part of a decoration project for next summer. The other part was a giraffe that I posted some time ago, and if you’ll look at the photo’s it looks like they have become friends. In real life this rarely happens, but it happens (check out the heartwarming story of Kiko and Loboito for my inspiration!). I used an old paint brush for his eyelashes and some fine wool for his tail (which you can’t really see on these photos…choosing is losing). No existing patterns were used, which was especially challenging for the head. I don’t know wheter it really shows, but I still struggle to get the eyes in the exact same place. I managed to cover it up by adding the eyelashes, but it’s not perfect. I’d love to get some tips on that!
WOW!!! This baby elephant is wonderful! What a wonderful addition to your yard or anywhere. You did a great job, including the eyes. Congrats!

Eyes…hmmm…very hard to get right no matter what the project. I love them though.
They seem to give this little guy a real personality. Personally I would not change them.

They are wonderful. That elephant is one of the best. I don’t have any advice on the eyes because I think you are spot on. I never get eyes symmetrical no matter how hard I try. And if you look at animals, you’ll see their eyes aren’t the same. Some comfort, huh? Beautiful.
Thanks Rex! That actually is comforting. It’s also comforting that, now i’ve shared the elephant, nobody really seems to notice the’re a little off 🙂
It’s just that the eyes are so important for any sculpture – animal and human faces. So I really want to get them right, though they are a bit larger compared with real elephants, but that’s the way I wanted it. I guess it’s always gonna be a trial-and-error part of the sculpting process 🙂
