Made by Amy Dawson
I designed 9 Flying Monkey puppets, plus 1 mask for the young actor playing Nikko, for our theatre production of The Wizard of Oz by using the Monkey Mask design. We added a pvc flange & filled the heads with spray foam, then used pvc pipe to attach to the body. We covered up the eye holes before applying the paper mache, and extended the backs of the mask pattern to fill out the head for the puppets.
We used either clay paper mache or strip and they both held up well during 5 weeks for rehearsals & performances. We also used other puppet elements in our show, including Toto & the scary Big Oz Head, so the monkeys made perfect sense to incorporate! Thank you Jonni, for such a great design that anyone can work with!

Great puppets! Your production of the Wizard of Oz must have been exciting to watch – and I’ll bet the young actors will remember that experience for years. Thanks for sharing your flying monkey puppets with us. 🙂
