Every year my kids get a custom hallway installation that’s unveiled on the morning of their birthday. They pick the theme, but the props and design are kept a surprise. In 2022, my son chose Splatoon as his theme. I used the paper mache clay recipe to coat the main octoling prop that brought the hallway experience together. It was the perfect workable material for the organic forms. I was able to get the smooth, durable, and paintable surface that I needed for the character. The perfect recipe and instructions to create something exciting on a budget!

Thank you so much, Jonni! Birthday hallways have definitely become a whole production in my household. Nothing gets installed till the eve of their birthdays after they fall asleep, so it’s a mad scramble toward the end, but all the work is absolutely worth it to see their faces light up on their birthday mornings. 🙂
What fun! Do they keep the birthday pieces after the big day? It looks like they could become family heirlooms. 🙂
We keep the pieces we absolutely can’t part with. They live in our basement. My husband and I joke that pretty soon we could charge admission to see all the weird stuff down there. 🙂 Other pieces, a lot of the big scenic elements, get broken down and repurposed for future hallways.
