School Mascot: Rainbow Colored Zebra

I teach Visual Arts at a charter school. We recently moved into a new building which has a lovely entry. Our mascot is a rainbow colored zebra so I decided to make a life-size paper mache sculpture to put in the entry.

I used a very large cardboard box for the armature. I took Jonni´s advice on gluing cardboard pieces stacked together and then gluing the legs to the stacks and the stacks to the body. Once I had the armature like I wanted it, I paper mached. After the paper mache, I used joint compound to smooth out all the bumps!

I used Gesso to seal the joint compound and then I painted the rainbow colored stripes. I used pipe cleaners for the tail and mane. The hardest part was transporting the finished sculpture to school! Many thanks to Jonni as I would never have considered making a life-size sculpture had I not had all her tutorials to show the way!
