The snail is about 31x55x25in. I made him with the outdoor concrete material, painted it with Home Depot outdoor acrylics, and varnished with a rattle can spray varnish. The eyes are magnetized LED lights, can be removed, and are waterproof. It’s the first sculpture I’ve had to build an inner structure for. He’s been outside for over a month now and he’s still doing great.
I made him as a gift for my brother. The eyes are a lot of fun as the color can be chosen with a remote, including a strobe feature. It’s become a fun spectacle for the street he lives on.

I know! I love Jonni’s concrete recipe. We can actually make outdoor art without spending a lot of money. I know it’s still a bit experimental, but so far so good.

The snail shell looks amazing…did you use something in particular for the armature for that? Great color effects on it, too
Thanks Lisa. The shell was a paper armature like you’d expect from a Paper Mache project. I did the paint job with my brother who is fabulous with color. He slapped pinks, blues and greens onto it and somehow made it work with the other colors I had chosen.
Wow – with a sculpture that size, and those LED snail eyes, I can see how it could turn into a tourist attraction! He’s not quite as big as your tiger or gorilla, but he definitely makes a statement. Has your brother given his snail a name yet? 🙂
His kids named him Tosk, after a character from Star Trek – Deep Space Nine. The character was a lizard man so the kids thought a snail was close enough lol.
