This is my last job, a 20cm ant, on papier mache.
Here the photos. Unpainted and in its natural habitat.
I made it with a wire frame and the back with carved Styrofoam.
I painted it with black acrylic, wood ant, which always appear in the garden.

This really looks like a giant ant. Great job!
Does the paper mache clay adhere okay to styrofoam? I have a project I’m dreaming up and I plan to use styrofoam as a shape base, then add the details in paper mache clay.
Yes. I have put clay over Styrofoam and then after the clay dried cut it out. I had no problem with it. Good luck. Would love to see your dreams!
I haven’t tried it myself, but Terry made her giraffe with foam and paper mache clay, and it worked for her, too. By the way, Rex, did we get to see the sculpture you made with the foam and PM clay? You probably showed it to us, but you know how fast I forget everything… 🙂
It’s in prison (a box) with the ravens I started four years ago. It was to be a stand for one of them, so no one has seen it yet. One of those sad projects!
Great job, kind of scary when it is that big! Nice detail!
Monica, I love your ant. When you said it was your “last job,” I thought you were never going to make anything again. Nearly had a heart attack. lol. Can you do a beetle next? They would go great together.
