Bring the magic of The Nutcracker to life with this Mouse King headdress mask!
Create a memorable mask with this downloadable pattern.
With a few inexpensive materials and the included instructions, you’ll have a stage-ready Mouse King mask in no time. The pattern creates all the shapes for you, so no sculpting or mask-making experience is needed.
Use your own creativity to give him an “attitude” with crumpled foil and paint. Then give him a custom-made crown – or make the crown like I did. It’s totally up to you. 🙂
How to Make Your Mouse King Mask:
Print the pattern and put it on cereal box cardboard. Then cut out the pieces
Tape the pieces together, using the instructions as a guide. Add foam balls for the eyes.
Add paper mache, with either newspaper or recycled brown paper from amazon.com boxes.
Bring your Mouse King to life with acrylic paint.
Finished size:
About 11 inches (27.94 cm) deep , 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) wide and 14.5 inches (35.56 cm) high, including the ears and crown. It will fit an adult head, but the size can be changed by printing the pattern larger or smaller, or by following the
instructions that come with the pattern PDF.

How to tape the pieces together:
This mask pattern doesn’t have many pieces, and it’s easy to tape them together. Watch the video below to see how to create your mask, using six cereal boxes and the downloadable pattern.
Finishing your Mouse King mask with optional foil details, a layer of paper mache, and paint:
I wanted a really fast mask, so I only added a few foil details to make the mouse look slightly angry, and painted it with spray paint and a few brush strokes with acrylic paint. I spent most of my time experimenting to see how I wanted the crown to look. And I had fun playing with my metallic paints. 🙂
To make your Mouse headdress mask you will need:
- The Pattern
- Access to a Printer
- Copy paper or full-sheet labels (I always use the labels, because it’s an easy way to stick the pattern to the cardboard)
- Glue stick if using copy paper instead of the labels
- Cardboard from 6 standard-sized cereal boxes or 12 letter-sized sheets of light chipboard.*
- Sharp scissors for cutting cereal box cardboard.
- Clear plastic tape and masking tape Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
- Aluminum foil (optional)
- Glue gun
- Paper strips and paste (Find recipes here) or TiteBond wood glue
- Acrylic paint and varnish
- Shoelaces or elastic straps to hold the mask in place

Hola buenas, queria saber en que escala a hecho la impresion para hacerlo y si me podria decir que medida tiene la linea recta (155) de la pagina 3. Es para ver si es muy chiquita o no, desde ya le agradezco
Hola. El patrón debe imprimirse al 100%. El borde #155 forma parte del hocico del ratón, así que la medida no te ayudará a decidir si la máscara es demasiado grande. Eso hará que encaje en una cabeza de 22″ de diámetro medida por encima de las orejas. Tengo un vídeo que muestra cómo hacer el patrón más pequeño si hace falta. Puedes verlo aquí.

Hi Kristin. This video shows how to make the patterns larger or smaller. To make just the cap larger, to fit a larger head, you would just cut the back center seam open, insert cardboard to fill in the space, and tape it all back together. I hope this helps.

How did you size it up? When I try my computer just cuts off the image. Did you get it printed elsewhere?
If it won’t fit on the page after you size it up, you’ll need to use the ‘poster’ setting on your printer, and then piece the pages together after they’re printed. It isn’t difficult. I have a video and post that might help.

Hi Logan. No, the headdress style is the only design I have for it. The mannequin he’s sitting on in the photo is about the same size as my head, so you can see that the bottom of his head isn’t quite wide enough to go over a head if the cap was removed. But if you could figure out how to see out, it might be possible to play around with it and make it work. But I haven’t tried it, and I don’t have a pattern for it, for that kind of mask.
