Made by Jane Adamo
The Mari Lwyd may look like a Halloween figure, but it’s really a Welsh Christmas Spirit: A pregnant mare who gave up her stall in the barn to make room for Baby Jesus. She has worn herself to the bone, searching for a place to deliver her foal. Today, gangs of carolers (one in a Mari Lwyd costume made of a real horse skull) go from door to door singing and begging food all through the holiday season.
I made mine as a hand puppet, and even fashioned a “hoof” so that the puppet could shake hands with people.
