This koala head sculpture is easy to make, with just two cereal boxes.

No sculpting experience is required – the  pattern creates all the shapes for you – but you get to paint him and add that crazy ear fur! 🙂

This little wall sculpture will make a delightful gift to anyone who loves Australian animals. They’ll be even more impressed when you say, “I made it myself!”

How to Make Your Koala Sculpture:

Print the pattern and put it on cereal box cardboard.

Cut out the pieces and tape them together, following the instructions that are included with the PDF pattern – or watch the videos below.

Add paper mache, strips and paste, or use paper mache clay. Then add ear ‘fur’ with paper strips, or any material of your choice.

And then bring your koala to life with acrylic paint.

Finished size –
About 4.75 inches (12.065 cm) high, 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) deep, and 7 inches (17.78 cm) wide. The size can be changed by printing the pattern larger or smaller.

Taping the pattern pieces together –

This pattern has only 16 pieces, so they don’t take much time to cut out and tape together.

Adding Paper Mache, Ear Fur and Paint:

I like to play around when I’m painting my sculptures, so be sure to look at lots of photos of koalas online. Then use your favorite photos as models when you paint your own sculpture. I only used a few colors, and used paper strips for the ear fur. You will probably think of another way to do it – so get creative! 🙂

To Make Your Paper Mache Koala Sculpture, You’ll Need:

• Access to a Printer
• Copy paper or full-sheet labels (I use the labels)
• Glue stick if using copy paper instead of labels
• The front and back from from 2 standard-sized cereal boxes, or 3 pieces of letter-sized “light chipboard*” that you can purchase online.
• Small scrap of corrugated cardboard for the back
• Sharp scissors for cutting the cereal box cardboard and a box cutter for the corrugated cardboard
• Clear plastic tape and masking tape. Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
• One 3/4” foam ball
• Paper strips and paste or paper mache clay. You can find recipes in the “recipes” tab at the top of this page
• Acrylic paint, and clear spray or acrylic varnish.
• Material of your choice for the ear fur

Note: I used brown paper for my koala, but newspaper works, too. Use whichever one is most convenient.
