When I shared photos of Nalla (a very happy dog) a few weeks ago I mentioned there was a back story. Here it is. When I started working on Nalla I decided not to make a pattern first. Not a smart move. It was an anatomical disaster (see first try photo) but I thought if I just replaced the back legs I could make it work (see second try photo). I was still not happy and by then his head was bugging me too. I decided to just start again, using a pattern this time.
On the way to the trash can with my failed attempt it struck me that the body reminded me of a rabbit. And so, after having his head chopped off and replaced two more times, as well as some minor reconstructive work on the body I ended up with Jack. I used PM clay for everything but the ears. Those are cardboard covered with several layers of traditional PM. “Painted” with colored tissue paper. This one was definitely a challenge but I’m happy I stuck with it.

Great jackrabbit, Joanne – and a great story, too! It reminds me of my draft horse armature that turned into a pit bull. Sometimes, these little surprises are what makes a sculpture so much fun. 🙂
