Large gorilla made with the new paper cement clay recipe. He stands 36in tall and 46in long and has glass eyes. I made him for a local town fair. It took about a month to make and I’m excited about the results. He also scared a bunch of dogs that happened into my booth 🙂
I’m in love with this new cement recipe. I feel it’s much easier to work with and much more durable. Just my opinion but I’m sold on using it. Thanks Jonni

For a hollow 3D sculpture, does anyone have a suggestion on what to use for an armature to sculpt on. I would like to make a 3D silicone mold when it is completed so wire may not be my best option.
I currently like to use crumpled foil for my armatures. If you’re making a silicone mold for it, does the original sculpture need to be hollow?
Hi Quincy. For all my sculptures I had a somewhat complicated process. But basically I printed out a 3d papercraft, laminated it, assembled it, then filled it with packing peanuts. The papercraft was the exoskeleton and the packing peanuts maintained the shape.
Beautiful! What a cool creation. May I ask approximately how heavy a piece this size using the concrete is?
Hi Dawn. It’s 50lbs. It’s awkward, but he’s light enough that I can lift him by myself. He’s hollow inside and the material is about 1/4in thick but much thicker on some areas of stress like where the limbs connect to the body.

Yea, I’m really impressed with the recipe. I use it exclusively now. It’s durable, doesn’t sag with moisture, and shapes well when molding. I love it.
I can see why he scared those dogs, Noah – he looks so real! The folks who saw him at the fair must have been as impressed as I am – thank you so much for showing him to us. 🙂
