Frog Mask Pattern

This frog mask is really silly – so it’s as fun to make as it is to wear. 🙂

The frog’s long tongue, wide-open smile, and great big eyes will make anyone who wears it the star of the party.

And the best part is that you can proudly say, “I made it myself!”

How to use the Frog Mask Pattern:

Print the pattern and stick it on cereal box cardboard.

Cut out the pieces and tape them together, using the instructions as a guide. Add big foam balls for the eyes with hot glue.

Add optional details with crumpled foil, then cover with one layer of paper mache. You can use newspaper or the brown paper from amazon boxes.

Bring your frog mask to life with acrylic paint, and give those big eyes a bright shine with clear fingernail polish.

Finished Size:

About 7 inches (17.78 cm) high, 9 inches (22.86 cm) wide and 15.5 inches (39.37 cm) deep, including the tongue. It will fit an adult head, but the size can be changed by following the instructions that come with the pattern, on page 17.

Watch these videos to see how to make your frog mask:

The frog mask is, admittedly, a little weird – but it isn’t hard to make. That long tongue is made separately, and added at the very end with a dab of hot glue and some masking tape. And the big eyeballs are just a couple of foam balls.

In the video above you saw me tape the pieces of the frog mask together. In the next one below, you’ll see how you can add a few easy details with crumpled foil, and then cover it with paper mache.

I actually forgot one of the details until after I sprayed my frog mask with primer, but no worries – I just added the foil, a bit more paper mache, and sprayed it again. Froggy didn’t mind. 🙂

I used an Australian Red-Eyed Tree Frog as the model for my frog mask. It was not easy to pick a frog species to use, because there are so many! And they’re all beautiful – even the brown frogs that live in my yard are lovely, if you get up close enough to see the amazing patterns on their skin. But I wanted one with very dramatic colors, and eyes that would really stand out. You can see how I painted my frog mask in the video below.

To make your Frog Mask, you’ll need:

• The Pattern
• Access to a Printer
• Copy paper or full-sheet labels (I always use the labels)
• Glue stick if using copy paper instead of the labels
• Cardboard from 4 standard-sized cereal boxes or 8 letter-sized sheets of light chipboard.*
• A small amount of aluminum foil (optional
• Sharp scissors
• Clear plastic tape and masking tape Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
• Two 2.5″ foam balls for the eyes
• Paper strips and paste. You can find recipes by clicking on the “recipes” tab at the top of the site.
• Acrylic paint. White primer or gesso is recommended, but optional.

* If purchasing cardboard in place of the cereal boxes, it will be sold as “light chipboard.” Medium or heavy chipboard is too stiff to bend well.
