This free bird mask pattern is just the beginning – add your creativity and imagination to make it a one-of-a-kind mask.
Just print it out and stick it to cereal box cardboard. You’ll need 2 1/2 cereal boxes for each mask. I admit it looks kind of silly now, but it will look great when you’ve added a layer of paper mache to it, and painted it in your own style.
This would be a great project for a mask-making party or art class! If you don’t have enough cereal boxes in your recycle bin (or if you don’t eat cereal), you can find light chipboard on amazon.com.

Once you have the pieces cut out and taped together, go wild with the details. This is a perfect opportunity to use up those bright, shiny, or sparkly acrylic paints in your stash. If you need some extra dazzle, add some feathers, too. You can also change the shape of the beak, by cutting some off, or adding more cardboard – the final look of your mask is totally up to you. 🙂

I work for a school district. I run the Title VI Native American Education Program for the entire district (K-12) and also the after school Latinos Unidos Club. I can see this mask project applying to both cultural groups. I’m excited to see what the kids can do! I’d love your free bird mask and plain face mask if you don’t mind. Would like to know how thick the joint compound recipe clay has to be for a four to five inch sculpture. Please let me know. I love your videos. You are giving so much to the art community! Caroline
You wouldn’t want to use a layer more than 1/4″ over your armature, no matter how big the sculpture is. I like to keep my layers around 1/8″ or even less. You can add new layers after the first one dries.

These patterns are amazing! I would love to have one for a lion dance mask for the kids at my school. I’ve tried 100 ways to make one and it’s always been to hard. We did succeed with a cardboard box, but it would be amazing to up our game!
