First Try At A Paper Mache Mask

Had been wanting to make an animal mask for a while and found Jonni’s youtube videos which provided a good base and easy to follow instructions which were perfect for my first attempt!

I ended up modifying the pattern a bit as the character i wanted to make is supposed to be a coywolf (mix between wolf and coyote and a little bit of domestic dog) so i made the ears bigger. I found the back part of the mask was looking a bit barren so i added fluff to it and modified the cheek fluff to to be more triangular as to match the ones i added to the back. (If you want to also do this please note that adding the fluff to the back and covering it in paper mache probably made the whole project take 2 to 3 times the time it would have otherwise taken.)

Been wearing it at events and gotten lots of compliments on it! Very comfortable and i love the idea of the back part since it makes it easy to wear the mask as a hat when needed. Have gotten lots of compliments on it and referred many people to this tutorial!

Also its relatively solid but it did crack a few times from getting dropped hard onto pavement repeatedly but covering the broken parts in wood glue then paper mache then guesso and repainting them has worked perfectly! I did not put sealant over the acrylic paint and used wood glue technique instead of the flour technique so i dont know if these things would factor into how well repairs work tho.

Very happy with how this first attempt turned out and definitely want to try making more masks in the future!
