Hi John,
Your elephants are truly lovely!
Did you make them from clay or use the armature like Jonni uses?
I’m dying to know how you got such a gorgeous finish. After my attempt at this elephant I’m starting a life-size conceptual ostrich and I’m trying to learn how to replicate the single colored smooth finish you achieved. My entire ostrich will hopefully have a similar, metallic iron-ish shiny black. Or dark bronze.
Hi Ali,
Sorry for the late reply, have been to the Canary islands for a fortnight. I just scrunch up newspaper and make a shape. Carbon fibre rods and wire for the legs & trunk.
I used gold acrylic and mixed green, blue and payne’s grey with it but not to thoroughly so you could mix the colours on the piece.
Very nice, John – as all your sculptures are. Thanks for showing them to us. 🙂
Thanks Jonni,
l found that if I mix joint compound and PVA glue, thin it with water and push it through a flour sieve to get rid of lumps. I use a paint brush and give it plenty of coats, it makes a nice surface without having to do a lot of rubbing down.
