Using the Dragon Head Pattern, I modified the shape to become a Skesis from the 80’s Henson classic, The Dark Crystal!
For the base, I glued the pattern pieces to cereal box cardboard. I used watered down white glue and toilet paper for the paper mache layer. I left off the horns and added some extra girth to places like the beak, nostrils, and brow bones as well as knocking out some of the teeth. The eyes were painted on plastic easter eggs and attached with hot glue. Acrylic paint next, then matte Mod Podge to seal everything and glossy Mod Podge for the eyes and inside/around the mouth. I also replaced the neck with a cowl that fits my own head and attaches under my neck using a plastic bag like a wig cap, then layers of masking tape.
While in the full costume my face is covered with black nylon so it disappears while not limiting my sight. This was for an 80’s event and I think I’ll reuse it for Halloween this year too!
The pattern was a delight to use and the accompanying video and instructions made it quite simple to make. Will definitely be making more creatures in the future, thanks Jonni!!

It’s wonderful, Janna. I have to admit that I hadn’t heard of the Skesis character, but I looked up the movie, and your Skesis head looks just like the one in the movie poster! I love the texture from the toilet paper mache, and it’s beautifully painted. I’ll bet you turned a few heads at the event. 🙂
