Donkey Headdress Mask Pattern

This donkey headdress mask is easy to make, with just a few pieces of cereal box cardboard, a layer of paper mache, and some paint.
No sculpting experience is required – the downloadable pattern creates all the shapes for you. You decide what colors to use and what expression he has. You can even give him a goofy donkey grin, if you want to.
Use this mask at the theater for the Midsummer Night’s Dream, or wear it for dress-up fun at Halloween or Mardi Gras. You can be sure your donkey mask will catch the attention of everyone who sees it — and you can proudly say “I made it myself!”
How to Make Your Donkey Headdress Mask:
Print the pattern, glue it on cereal box cardboard and cut out the pieces.
Tape the pieces together, add foil details and give him an expression
Add paper mache, with newspaper or brown paper from amazon boxes.
Paint the donkey mask with acrylic paint, using the colors you like best.
Finished size –
About 6.25 inches (15.87 cm) high,
13.5 inches (34.29 cm) wide and 13.5
inches (34.29 cm) deep, including the
ears.
It will fit an adult head, but the
size can be changed by printing the
pattern larger or smaller, or by following
the instructions on page 18 of the downloadable pattern PDF.

Taping the pattern pieces –
The pieces go together pretty fast. In addition to cutting out the pieces and taping them together, you’ll be adding a small amount of crumpled foil for details around the nostrils and the eyes. You’ll also add some foil to the bottom lip, so you can move it around to give your donkey an expression that you can find in donkey photos online.
Finishing the Donkey Mask –
Donkeys come in a lot of different colors. I “cheated” by using the brown paper mache as the base color for my brown donkey, and added just a few colorful details. I also added a mane using brown paper from amazon.com boxes, but you may have a better idea for making the mane on you mask. 🙂
To make your donkey mask you will need:
- The Pattern
- Access to a Printer
- Copy paper or full-sheet labels (I always use the labels)
- Glue stick if using copy paper instead of the labels
- Cardboard from 4 standard-sized cereal boxes or 8 letter-sized sheets of light chipboard.*
- Sharp scissors for cutting cereal box cardboard.
- Clear plastic tape and masking tape Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
- Aluminum foil
- One 1.25″ foam ball for the eyes
- Glue gun
- Paper strips and paste (Find recipes here)
- For mane I used painted brown paper, but you might want to use yarn or another material instead
- Acrylic paint and varnish
- Shoelaces or elastic straps to hold the mask in place

I’m from a state school in Spain. We want to use 4 of your patterns to use it in our Arts class. We would like to know if the donkey pattern could be a mask too instead of a head-mask.

Hi Lida. It might be possible to use the donkey pattern that way, but you’d need to put eye holes in his forehead. Donkey eyes are on the side, instead of the front. And you may need to print the pattern larger in order to get it to cover the face. The donkey head is only about 4.25″ wide. So, I think it’s possible, but I’ve never tried it, so you’d need to play around with it to make it work. I do have a unicorn mask that goes in front of the face. You could leave off the horn, change the shape of the muzzle and nose with crumpled foil before adding paper mache, and paint it in donkey colors. That might be easier.
