Cheshire Cat Headdress Mask Pattern

This downloadable Cheshire Cat mask pattern is designed with busy creators in mind, so it’s easy to make—no mask-making experience is needed.
Use some acrylic paint to add some big green eyes and traditional stripes (or go ahead and paint him purple). Then watch as your audience grins right back at him when he’s worn on stage.
Or, you can wear him to your next dress-up party, and proudly tell your friends, “I made it myself!”
How to Make Your Cheshire Cat Headdress Mask:
Print the pattern pieces, stick them to cereal box cardboard, and cut out the pieces.
Tape the pieces together, and add foam balls for the eyes, following the included instructions and the videos below.
Add paper strips and paste, using newspaper or brown paper from amazon.com boxes.
Bring your Cheshire Cat to life with acrylic paint. You can make him orange, like I did, or paint him purple like the Cheshire Cat in the 1951 Alice in Wonderland movie. It’s up to you. 🙂
Finished size:
About 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) deep, 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) wide and 15 inches (38.1 cm) high. It will fit an adult head, but the size can be changed by following the instructions on page 25 of the downloadable pattern PDF.

I’m quite fond of orange cats, but you can paint yours any color you like – even purple or Pink. 🙂
To Make Your Cheshire Cat Mask You Will Need:
- The Pattern
- Access to a Printer
- Copy paper or full-sheet labels
- Glue stick if using copy paper for pattern
- Cardboard from 7 standard-sized cereal boxes, or 13 pieces of “light chipboard.”
- Sharp scissors for cutting cereal box cardboard
- Clear plastic tape and masking tape Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
- Aluminum foil
- Glue gun
- Paper strips and paste (find recipes here) I used lightweight brown paper with cooked flour and water glue, but you can use newspapers, instead. Titebond III Wood Glue can be used, too, for a super-strong mask.
- 1.25″ foam ball for the eyes. A slightly larger ball would work, too.
- Acrylic gesso or latex primer
- Acrylic paint and varnish, any colors you choose
- Fingernail polish and fake eyelashes (both optional)
- Shoe laces or elastic straps, and four small metal washers.
* If purchasing cardboard in place of the cereal boxes, it will be sold as “light chipboard.” The thickness may be listed as 22 pt. Medium or heavy chipboard is too stiff to bend well.
