Capybara Mask Pattern

Everyone loves Capybaras! These big, popular rodents are calm, curious, (and a little silly), so they make everyone smile. That’s why this mask is so much fun to wear. 🙂

The downloadable pattern does all the shaping for you, so no sculpting skills are needed. And when it’s done, you can proudly say “I made it myself!”

How to use the pattern to make a capybara mask:

Print the pattern and put it on cereal box cardboard.

Cut out the pieces and tape them together, using the instructions included in the pattern and in the video below.

Add paper mache, using newspaper, or use the brown paper that comes in amazon.com boxes, like I did.

Bring your capybara to life with acrylic paint, using your favorite online photo as a model – or get some ideas for your mask from the painting video below.

Finished size –

About 11 inches (27.94 cm) deep, 8.5 inches (21.59 cm) wide and 7.75 inches (19.685 cm) high. It will fit an adult head, but the size can be easily changed by following the instructions on page 15 of the downloadable PDF pattern.

This first video shows how all the pieces are taped together. You’ll also see and how to add foam ball for the eyes and put a small amount of foil around the nostrils.

This second video shows you how I painted my own Capybara mask. I used the brown paper that comes stuffed in Amazon.com boxes for the paper mache, and it’s a perfect color for a Capybara. I used the paper as my base color, and added a few fast details over it. You can actually do it a lot faster than I did – if you look for cartoon drawings of Capybaras, you’ll see that they just make the eyes and ears black – and leave the rest brown. And it works! 🙂

To make your Capybara mask, you’ll need:

• The downloadable Capybara mask pattern
• Access to a Printer
• Copy paper or full-sheet labels (I always use the labels, because it’s really easy)
• Glue stick if using copy paper instead of the labels
• Cardboard from 3 standard-sized cereal boxes or 6 letter-sized sheets of light chipboard.*
• Sharp scissors for cutting cereal box cardboard
• Clear plastic tape and masking tape Note: Don’t use disappearing gift wrap tape – it isn’t strong enough.
• Masking tape
• A small amount of aluminum foil (optional)
• Glue gun for the eyes and ears (or you can just use tape)
• One 1.25” (3.175 cm) foam ball for the eyes.
• Paper strips and paste (Find paper mache paste recipes here)
• Acrylic paint and varnish
• Fake eyelashes (optional)
• Clear fingernail polish (also optional, but highly recommended)
• Shoelaces or elastic straps to hold the mask in place

*If you don’t have any cereal boxes for your mask, you can buy light chipboard online. It’s the same thing as cereal box cardboard, but without the pictures. 🙂
