  1. Hey there Mrs. Jonni. I have a question. Would I use a thin layer of paper mache clay over a paper mache mask to make it smooth over the joints? Or how would I go about that. I apologize if it seems like a silly question I have watched and read a lot but I’m at a loss. I’m also getting way too excited and don’t want to mess up so far. Thank you in advance .
    Sincerely,
    Allison

    • Hi Allison. You can use a layer of paper mache clay over your paper mache mask, but it will make it a little heavier. You can also use a very thin layer of drywall joint compound to smooth the surface, but only in areas that won’t be flexed a lot. The joint compound doesn’t have any reinforcement, so it can crack if it’s bent. I did use it on my cat mask, though, and it worked. You can see a video about smoothing paper mache with joint compound here.
