Archangel Michael

Made by Sarah Manchester

I’ve just finished modelling Archangel Michael. I can do no more. It has taken every last drop of energy! He will rest for a couple of weeks to thoroughly dry out before being painted. He is made entirely using Jonni’s clay recipes, with a little decorator’s filler on the face and hands. The entire process is being logged on my sculpture blog. It’s not quite finished as I write this, but will be over the next few days. Take a look if you are interested:

  1. No wonder you are exhausted, he is fabulous! Such fine detail and rendering! Maybe you shouldn’t paint it except as all white or bronze. Then the details won’t be missed with all the color….you have your vision though.
So I guess doing all the archangels is out, huh?

    • Thanks Eileen. Patinated Bronze is in the plan but I hate white! I am already refreshed and looking forward to starting Raphael’s paint work next week. I will just experiment a bit as I have a vague idea what I want but not exact. A bit like the sculpture itself when I start. It is a project in itself. I will return to Archangels after the next project is complete, probably. I have kept the wing template! The blog is finished too, if you want to take a look.

  2. Wow Rex! What a brilliant reaction. Thankyou.
Hopefully, you won’t have to wait long for the colour version. I start painting Raphael next week, once all the dust has been cleared away in the studio and I’ve recovered my energy drained by Michael! I am so glad you like him.

  3. Wow! What a change. Every night when I crawl into bed, I’m thinking of Michael the Archangel. Now I have a new image. You are not only creative but a visionary! One of my favorite sculptures ever.

I’ll be back looking at your tutorial on making wings. That’s for sure.

Can’t wait to see how you color him. Thanks.
